Emelita Street School Parent Update

Spellathon-Spring 2011

April 2, 2011

Your children will be coming home with information on our spellathon. All monies collected will go to support the Emelita children and programs.

Students will be rewarded with prizes based on their performance on the spelling test. If the school raises $4000.00 in donations and pledges, Ms Mayorga has agreed to dye her hair PURPLE! This is both educationally rewarding for the children, the school and fun for everyone ….. If you would like to help us with the spellathon, please contact EmelitaPTA@gmail.com .

SPELL-A-THON – Procedures

Dear Emelita Parents:

Welcome to the first annual Emelita Spellathon. We hope this to be one of our most rewarding fundraisers. Not only is it educational but it will help fund our children’s education as well! Due to continuing state budget cuts, we are looking for different and educationally rewarding ways to support the school’s commitment to educating our children.  Our target is to bring in at least $4,000, all directly benefiting our school.

Here’s how it works:

Grades K-3 has 25 spelling words and grades 4-5 have 50 spelling words to learn. Sponsors pledge either a flat amount or an amount of money for each word spelled correctly. The tests are graded and the packet will be returned to the students for pledge collection. Please submit cash or a check made payable to Emelita PTA & a pledge sheet for each student as it is difficult for our accounting committee to split money between siblings or classrooms.

2011 Spellathon Pledge Collection Procedure

With the help of your parents:

  • Thank the people who helped you with the Emelita Spellathon!
  • For a personal touch, consider making Thank You notes.

Please do NOT go alone door to door. Please ask an adult to help you ask your family, friends and neighbors.

When collecting your pledges take with you a pen, the pledge sheet, test results, and an envelope.

1. Show your sponsor the test results.

2. Using your pledge sheet, explain the total amount owed.

3. Encourage them to write a check payable to Emelita PTA or pay in cash. If you and a sibling are receiving a donation, please ask your sponsor to write separate checks or give cash to each of you, separately.

4. Be sure to thank your sponsors.

5. Keep all the money and checks in the envelope with your pledge sheet.

6. Return your donations to your teacher in the envelope with your pledge sheet. (Parents please write the total amount on the envelope)

Return the envelope to your teacher by April 27, 2011

Prizes will be distributed Friday, May 6, 2011 when the Top Bees and other top spellers are announced at the school assembly.
